Nintendo 3DS is the fastest selling console ever in Japan with over 5 million units sold

Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo 3DS is the fastest selling console ever in Japan. The console sold five million units in just fifty-two weeks according to Nintendo. Sales for the Nintendo 3DS were initially a bit slow and disappointing, but as soon Nintendo slashed the recommended retail price and released big games such as Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 sales for the system experience an outstanding increase, which has led it to earn the title of “The fastest selling console ever in Japan”.

Dillion’s Rolling Western to hit European eShop next week?

According to gaming magazine, MCV, Dillion’s Rolling Western is scheduled to be released in Europe next Thursday. We’ve got to remember that this is a rumour.

The game was revealed at E3 2011, and was one of the first eShop games revealed by Nintendo. This rumour does have some weight to it though; Dillion’s Rolling Western is currently scheduled for a Q1 release.

Game developers dropping support for Vita, moving to 3DS instead?

According to Kiyoshi Shin, the Japanese branch director of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) an anonymous source has tipped him off and stated that

“Major Japanese companies are canceling all projects intended for the Vita and are changing development to the 3DS.”

It’s hard to take this quite seriously, as Sony has been emphasising third-party support ever since the PlayStation Vita’s public début. But we’ve also got to consider that the PlayStation Vita has been doing really bad in Japan; some weeks its predecessor, the PlayStation Portable, has been outselling it.

So for a video game developer, it’s more attractive if the system your creating a game for is doing well in terms of sales. Personally, I feel that smaller developers (not necessarily the “major” developers) are shifting development to the Nintendo 3DS, due it being relatively cheap to develop for and having a large install base.

After the break you can find a reply from Sony’s Worldwide Studios Vice President Scott Rohde, when he had an interview with Gamesutra and discussed the rumours.  Continue reading
