Exclusive Interview with Jools Watsham, about the 3DS!

We’ve done it! We’ve got our first exclusive interview with none other than Jools Watsham! I’d say its a pretty cool interview. But before I start I want to thank all the users on the 3DSForums (Run by David) who have submitted questions for this interview.

Jools Watsham

3DSC: Do you plan on making any FPS’ for the 3DS?
JW: Yes, we definitely plan on making a First-Person Shooter for the 3DS. Time will tell whether it becomes a reality or not.
3DSC: Many people have complained that there is only 1 slide pad, saying that this will hamper FPS controls. If you were to create an FPS game would this be a problem for you, Do you think you can work around it some how?
JW: I can understand why people want two Slide Pads, but I don’t see it as a problem for a FPS on the 3DS. We would adopt the same control scheme we used for Dementium and Moon, where the Touch Screen and Stylus are used to aim instead of a second Slide Pad, and use the single Slide Pad to move forwards/backwards and strafe.
3DSC: Do you have any current ideas about how 3D could be incorporated into games?
JW: Providing players with the ability to truly judge depth in games will open up many new experiences.
3DSC: Could we see a sequel to Dementium II on the 3DS?
JW: Yes, we could.
3DSC: With the improved online aspect of the Nintendo 3DS do you hope to create a game utilizing the online component of the 3DS some way? I.e. Using tag mode to retrieve new maps for multiplayer
JW: Yes, we hope to utilize the on-line component of the 3DS for sure. Our newest DS title, which will be announced soon, supports local multiplayer. It is exciting for us to finally embark on multiplayer, and we intend to explore it more on the 3DS.
3DSC: Do you believe that “hardcore” games will be able sell more on the 3DS than they do on the DS?
JW: Yes, I do. Nintendo are making a conscious effort to provide hardcore gamers with an excellent selection of 3DS titles, such as Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil. It is no secret that the majority of the DS audience is younger or more casual players, and it seems evident that Nintendo want to expand upon that audience and attract more hardcore players to their new handheld.
3DSC: What is your favourite feature of the 3DS, and why?
JW: My favorite feature of the 3DS is the Slide Pad, because analog control is a wonderful thing. But, I have to say that the 3D aspect is pretty amazing and the increased graphical power of the 3DS is very exciting too.
3DSC: Do you think Nintendo has binned friend codes for the 3DS?
JW:  I don’t know, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re still used to maintain security.
3DSC: Lastly, any word on a European release for Dementium II?
JW: I heard that it has reached some parts of Europe. It is best to contact SouthPeak to get the full lowdown. We just make the games.
3DSC: Thanks for your answers Jools, any closing comments?
JW: Thanks Mark, I appreciate your interest in Renegade Kid. I am confident that we will produce many games for the 3DS. We are very excited about the 3DS.
